BOOK REVIEW: Start with why by Simon Sinek
Aug 26, 2017RATING: A must for your library
FORMAT: audiobook
LANGUAGE: English
Stages of entrepreneurship: Foundation
CATEGORY: Entrepreneurship, Motivation, Business
QUICK DESCRIPTION: Author Simon Sinek presents the reason that some people and organizations are more innovative, have more influence and are more profitable than others. The book is about a naturally occurring pattern, a way of thinking, acting and communicating that gives some leaders the ability to inspire those around them, the Golden Circle. He seeks to connect with people who have an open mind for new ideas, who seek to create long-lasting success and who believe that your success requires the aid of others.
MY THOUGHTS: Simon Sinek shares the importance of building your business, your services and your teams around your main motivation, your beliefs, or your WHY. But we so often forget our WHY and yet, it is our reason for being in business and doing what we do. He states that by identifying and more importantly sharing your WHY (for the business as well as yourself) with your team, your customers and your potential customers, it will help them to better understand your business and the purpose of your services. He gives some good examples to help illustrate his point.
I have had a lot of time to reflect on my past successes and not so-successful business ventures and I was struck by the consistent WHY in each and every one, no matter the structure, no matter the industry, no matter the result: to help people achieve their goals. This is once again reflected in the work that I am doing as a business coach, advising entrepreneurs and supporting the work of organizations. I encourage you to do the same.
I also appreciated how he explains that making money is not a WHY, but rather a result – a lesson that so many entrepreneurs and business people tend to forget. It is the reason that you need to truly find your WHY.
QUOTE: Only when the WHY is clear and when people believe what you believe can a true loyal relationship develop.
